Biting her lip softly, Cassidy moved towards the bench where Micah was sitting, her heart racing. What could he possibly want? There were a million things running through her mind. He could be breaking up with her, he could just want to see her, oh, god, he could be leaving. As that thought crossed her mind, she took a deep breath, clasping her hands together as she looked up at him, kissing him back lightly, “Hi.” Cass smiled, her voice slightly shaky, although she tried to hide her nerves. What was going on? Sitting on the bench, she turned sideways and kept her eyes on his before speaking up, “What’s the matter, are you okay?”
Micah let out a breath and grabbed her hand, lacing his fingers with hers. He locked his eyes with hers, trying to find the words to explain how he felt. “I’m.. I’m fine. Just.. nervous, I guess. Which is weird because I’m usually not nervous. Reckless is usually me.” He rubbed his thumb against her hand, “I wanted.. I wanted to ask you something. But let me explain this first.” He let out another steadying breath. “Everyone’s leaving.. Everyone I know and I love is gone now. Marnie, Zach, even Jo.” He shook his head and shrugged, the ring in his pocket weighing heavy on him. “But.. the one person in my life that’s stayed is you. You’ve always been there. You’ve dealt with my disorder and my crazy attitude, and you’ve never decided I wasn’t worth your time. And for that, I will always be grateful.” He took his free hand and slipped it in his pocket, not removing the box yet. “I love you, you know. A lot. Which is why I don’t want to lose you. You’ve become such a major part of my life that I can’t imagine losing you.” He took a breath, “So.. My question, and why I brought you here..” He slipped the box out of pocket, opening it for her. “I wondered.. If you would marry me.”
It seemed like Hillcrest had emptied in the past few days. The days where her voice overwhelmed her, telling her to just kill off a few to make room for everyone else, her voice was tired now. There was nothing to complain about. When she arrived at Hillcrest, Cass didn’t know that she was going to meet the most important person in her life. She had no idea that she was going to find someone whom her voice liked, someone who would stick with her through it all, but she had. Micah was her everything since day one, and even someone who’s blind could see that.
When she got a text from him telling her to meet him in the garden, she was somewhat surprised. Cass had been staying in his room a couple of nights out of the week, although the nurses didn’t approve, but he was the only person who could make her happy. Smiling to herself, Cass put on a nice spring dress, considering the weather outside was incredibly warm, and walked out of her room towards the steps, trying to decipher what he could possibly want.
As she approached the door that led outside, she could see him sitting on the bench, so perfectly. He looked so handsome, sitting there and waiting. Cass smiled again and pushed the door open, walking down the steps towards the bench and pausing in front of her boyfriend, her smile even bigger. “Hi, babe.”
Micah closed his phone after sending out his texts to Zach, Marnie and Jo. His last attempts at contacting them - wondering where they were. He locked the screen and slipped his phone in his pants pockets, his thoughts going everywhere. He didn’t know exactly why he kept texting them, but he had to keep hope that they were okay. That they didn’t hate him and didn’t leave because of him. He let out a sigh as he looked around, waiting for Cass.
As he approached him, he felt his stomach fall into his chest. She looked gorgeous. He had never seen her in a dress before, and her legs were always welcome to be shown off. He smiled at her and stood up to kiss her softly, “Hey, you.” He smiled down at her and sat back down on the bench, “Sit down.” He wasn’t sure how he was going to approach this. His palms began to sweat as he chuckled. She was probably thinking the worst possible things right now, but he was stuck. Couldn’t find the words to say, the things to let her know how he felt.
